When Charlotte, a psychology student from Munich, arrived in Ecuador just five weeks ago, she never imagined how profoundly this experience would transform her life. She came hoping to improve her Spanish and discover a new culture, but soon realized that volunteering in Ecuador is so much more: it’s about opening your heart, learning, contributing, and growing.
Learning Spanish from the Heart
In a country where almost nobody speaks English—let alone German—Charlotte immersed herself completely in Spanish. Her progress has been remarkable. Day by day, practicing with patients, doctors, and Ecuadorians, she has not only sharpened her listening and comprehension but also gained the confidence to express herself. What started as a challenge has become one of her greatest achievements.
A Living Classroom for Her Future Career
Charlotte volunteers at a psychiatric hospital, working alongside Ecuadorian psychiatrists. For a future psychologist, this is an invaluable opportunity: she has been able to observe how treatments are approached in Ecuador compared to Germany, participate in group therapy sessions, and learn techniques used for addictions, eating disorders, and other pressing issues. All of this has given her a broader and more human professional perspective.
Warmth and Hospitality Everywhere
One of the aspects that has moved her most is the warmth and kindness of Ecuadorians. From day one she felt welcomed, treated with genuine friendliness and open arms. This closeness has allowed her to integrate authentically, experience the culture firsthand, and feel part of the community.
Flavors, Colors, and Healthy Living
As a committed vegetarian, Charlotte has been amazed by the variety of fresh foods and vegetables Ecuador offers. Although rice is a staple, she has enjoyed combining it with colorful, flavorful ingredients. Every day she discovers new, fresh juices made from exotic fruits unknown in Germany, turning each meal into a sensory adventure.
Weekends of Nature and Inspiration
A fitness and outdoor enthusiast, Charlotte spends her weekends exploring the Andes, breathing fresh air, hiking under bright blue skies, and admiring postcard-perfect landscapes. These escapes have become her source of relaxation and inspiration.
Beyond Tourism: Making a Real Impact
For Charlotte, volunteering in Ecuador has meant far more than visiting a beautiful country. It’s living the culture, learning a language, contributing her time and knowledge, and at the same time taking home experiences and memories that will mark her forever. She says she wants to return, because this journey has shown her that volunteering is a way to help make the world a better place.
